On the Cover: Winter 2015-2016

Natural Selection

The serene, wintry windowscape on this issue’s cover, a digital painting with pencil-drawn components by Sam Kalda, Illustration MFA ’14, fictionalizes elements of his Greenpoint apartment. In fact, the expansive kitchen window that it’s based on looks out over “vinyl-sided houses and a maze of clotheslines,” not skyscrapers and a water tower. And the cat resembles one he had as a child, not his current feline roomie. But the illustration does capture the peaceful mood of his apartment, which he describes with a quote from Jean Cocteau: “I love cats because I enjoy my home; and little by little, they become its visible soul.” For more of Kalda’s reimagined living quarters, check out “Natural Selection”.
