WHOM DO YOU ADMIRE MOST, AND WHY?

MY GRANDMOTHER,
BEATRICE FAULKNER

Beatrice Faulkner, Jenkins’ grandmother, second from left, worked for the Milwaukee Urban League before moving to New York.

The person I admire most is my grandmother Beatrice Faulkner. She was so ahead of her time, intelligent, classy, modern, sophisticated, cosmopolitan, and service oriented. Grandmother worked with and was great friends with some civil rights giants, like Vernon Jordan, Whitney M. Young, and Ron Brown. She worked for the Urban League affiliate in Milwaukee, and then she moved to New York and worked with the National Urban League. Eventually, she retired from ExxonMobil in Houston, Texas, where she worked closely with engineers. She encouraged me to be responsible with my money, volunteer, and involve myself in community service and social justice. I had the pleasure of working at the New York Urban League in Harlem for three years, and every day I was reminded of how she paved the way for many people, including myself.
