One question for an FIT community member
Anne Miller, NP, director of Student Health Services
WHY DOES HEALTH SERVICES
OFFER ALTERNATIVE
THERAPIES LIKE MASSAGE AND
ACUPUNCTURE
?
When I became director in 2006, I saw so much anxiety among students. I thought, “How do we get these students to chill out?” I hired an acupuncturist, and right away she was fully booked. We didn’t even have to market it. We expanded to a part-time massage therapist, and now we have two.
I brought in a cosmetologist for skincare issues like acne and eczema. She has great moisturizers. She’ll also look at whatever products the students are using and tell them whether they’re good quality.
Gabby, our nutritionist, works with students with eating disorders, weight issues, diabetes, and irritable bowel. But she also helps students eat a balanced diet. She advises students how to eat well on the run, and she does cooking demonstrations for putting together a fast, healthy meal.
Complementary approaches like these make the Health Services environment feel less clinical, and that’s important. They may be the first point of contact for students who might be hesitant to seek traditional medical care.
